There is no need to "shutdown" the clients, just log out and power them
off. Or just log out and leave them on.

The unfortunate side-effect of this is that kids may get into the habit
of just powering off any-old machine without shutting it down.

I've been asked this one before and I can't think of a good technological
solution to it. It is a training issue, for better or worse.

Since running systems through constant power on/power off cycles is hard
on the hardware, maybe it would be best to just train the kids not to
turn the computers off - tell them that the teachers would do that at the
end of the day?
