I'd like to add the following as the error message appearing at the end of
the bootup attempts...
"Unknown S3 chipset: Chip_ID = 0x8a25 rev. 2" that is followed by:
"A configured device found, but display modes could not be resolved"

Thanks,
Aaron

--------------
I have 25 or so windows boxes with the S3 ProSavage PM133 chipset built into
the motherboard. They are currently running in win2kpro and do fine. I am
planning on converting them over to an LTSP lab as soon as possible so I
tried a box on a known working LTSP server at my district admin building. I
have a working boot floppy and I am getting dhcp settings properly, however,
I am having all sorts of problems getting the video to work. I set up
settings for that workstation in dhcpd.conf and lts.conf. The settings
aren't working there either. I've tried both auto and XF86_SVGA in the
XSERVER= line to no avail. When using auto, the screen comes up black when
trying to launch x windows. It comes up with a text screen that flashes
information very quickly at me about 10 times and then dies with a no screen
found error. Best I can tell, the error says something about HSYNC not being
found. I've tried manually specifying that value with no luck(see below).
The video card has 8mb of built in memory on it and is only a few years old,
so I'd like to not have to replace it. Below is the relevant section of my
lts.conf:

[testimc]
X_SERVER		= XF86_SVGA
X_MODE_0		= 800X600
X_MODE_1		= 1024X768
X_MODE_2		= 640X480
RUNLEVEL		= 5
X_COLOR_DEPTH	= 16
X_VIDEO_RAM		= 8192
X_VERTREFRESH	= 50-120
X_HORIZSYNC		= 31-64

----end lts.conf snippet-------
I forced the video ram setting since linux was registering it incorrectly. I
checked it under windows and it shows as an 8mb card. (I tried it without
forcing.no difference). I tried both forcing and not forcing the color depth
as shown above. The vertrefresh and hsync #'s are from a website I linked to
from www.ltsp.org and were specifically for my monitor. I tried booting with
and without those settings as well. I also tried XSERVER settings of auto
and s3 still to no avail.

Has anyone had any experience with S3 cards or know any tricks I may be
missing?

Thanks in advance,
Aaron
