Hello Aaron, I must have missed the original e-mail, however after
reading what you describe, it sound exactly like what happened to my
diskless workstations when the graphics chipset was not auto-detected.
To solve the problem, I went into my lts.conf file
(/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf) and specified the proper Xserver for the
chipset I was using (ati).

I knew what chipset was being used from physical examination of the
card, and from other operating systems that were on the same hardware.
Although the auto detection algorithms are fairly advanced, they are not
complete. http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/RELNOTES3.html#10 gives a
listing of all chipsets supported by the new 4.2.0 version of Xfree86
and corresponding Xserver drivers to run them.

Depending on your situation, I would do one of the following: If this
is just one machine that is having this problem, create an entry in your
lts.conf file by the mac address if the machine that is having this
error, and specify that this specific station use a specific Xserver.
For example, add the following lines to your lts.conf file:

# comment lines:
# New Section for workstations that are not being auto-detected
# Sections seperated by their MAC address
[00:50:56:59:7f:81]
	XSERVER		= tseng
# or whatever the Xserver chipset might be.

Once you have corrected the problem, I would suggest opening a dialogue
with Jim McQuillan about adding your specific chipset identity so that
future versions of LTSP will auto-detect your specific chipset.

Good Luck!
