First you should have java installed (which you have), and check that
it is actualy working
Secondly you must install the plug-in for Mozilla.

You should check the mozilla web-pages for this (projects, java).
In the information it says that you should get the plugin
from Netscape (version 6) and use the 1.3.0 version (so not 1.4.0 ??).

Last time I tried it, you must install it as root as other
users where not allowed to write the mozilla directories.

Cheers
