Your instructions make sense but you'll have to help me with what util to
decompress and compress .jar files with. I am not familiar with that
extension. Thanks for the answers!!

Aron,

Here is how I accomplished this. Your path to the Mozilla install
directory may be different I think in RH 7.3 they are /usr/lib/mozilla
but this will steer you in the right direction.

I messed around with this for hours, Googled the heck out of it and all
I came up with was other folks asking the same question. I started
reading the developers threads on customization and started to
understand a little how this works.
If you are looking for some stuff to read go to the Mozilla developers
docs or Go to google groups and run a search using the term

mozilla US.jar

If you have not used file roller before you might want to experiment
with it a little. You will need it to unpack and repack the .jar file.

Being the cautious type I copied the entire mozilla directory as
mozilla_orig. Before I started mucking around I'm glad I did!

I had the same issue with the profiles as I went down the same path as
you to begin with. I think all I did to get back to normal was to remove
.mozilla from /etc/skel

Netscape has a tool called CCK that makes branding (which is what you
are wanting to do) a whole lot easier.

The mozilla folks have a CCK in the works. But not even an alpha yet.

I think this could be better documented but browser defaults and browser
branding is very important to many. Just think back to the desktop ICON
wars of a few years ago on Win98.

Also I am not sure that I read this correctly or not but I don't think
it is permissible to change some of the default sidebar settings,
something to do with netscape licensing.

I'd still like to figure out how to change the default to be a Go button
instead of a Search button.

After all that long winded comentary here's how I did it. ;-)

.js files for new users are seeded from compressed jar files in the
instal directory.

Copy US.jar and decompress then edit /navigator-region/region.properties
then recompress.

Verify the directory structure and permissions remain the same as the
original.

If after tinkering around a little you find these instructions are too
vague let me know and I will help.

This worked out well for me. I changed the default splash page from
RedHat to Welcome to K12LTSP at St. Mary's Technology Center... with a
nice little picture.

Changed the home page to the schools and on the personal toolbar has
Google Google/images AskJeeves for kids websters dictionary and
Discovery for kids.
