This is likely a problem with XFree86.  What graphics chip are you using?

Something to try is to boot into runlevel 3, run

startx >/tmp/tmp.txt 2>&1

And mail the resulting output to the list.  This will be exactly what
XFree86 is thinking.  Also post both XF86Config and XF86Config-4, as well
as where the symlink /etc/X11/X is pointing (I think that's where it is).

Anyway, that should help.
