[K12OSN] making print servers of old machines

What's the minimum hardware I need (cpu, hd capacity and ram) to set up a box 
just to be a print server -- I have no budget for net print toys, so I thought 
I might use some old boxes and attach printers to them.

If I'm serving wintel workstations do I need samba? What do I need to install?
