David,
i'll try to talk you through this tomorrow. For now, a quick
explanation: oo understands only postscript printers. what that means is
that you have to specify gs as filter for the printer defuned at the
system level or in spadmin enter an appropriate piped command line,
something of the sort:
gs -q -sDEVICE=cdj550 -sOutputFile="lpr -Pmylittlehp840c" -
this takes ps output og oo print and pumps it through gs to produce data
stream compatible with cdj550 driver (hp840c among others). btw, the "-'
at end of command is very important: it tells gs to use standard input and
to stay non-interactive.
placing gs in the filter line in the /etc/printcap makes sense,
but only if you paln to have all printed output in ps formart.
personally i think that this is somewhat sucky, windoze does it
better, not much better, but better nevertheless. there must be a way to
take printer definitions ftrom the system and translate them automagically
into oo definitions, better, why have separate definitions?
tomorrow i'll set up a couple of my inkjets and an oki184 so i'll
tell you haw it goes. julius
