I'm with Dan, these are more of suggestions then recommendations.  As
previously noted elsewhere, I use Mondo Rescue to back up a samba server to
CD-RW.  It works very well, although the documentation for the command line
switches can be a little confusing at first.  Once you get it set though,
it works (and that's what counts! ;-)

I back up another box to a 20GB IDE Seagate tape drive.  I really wanted to
get Arkeia to work (License=Free to backup 3 boxes (1 server/2 clients))
but it didn't like the IDE tape drive (even in IDE-SCSI mode).  I ended up
using a home brewed script to do the job with tar.  Eh, it ain't pretty but
it works with the tape drive...

Anyway, Arkeia's something you might have a look at if you have SCSI Tape:
