I don't want linux on the local machine, I want win9x or NT on the local
machines. Okay, I guess I better explain the scenario.

I've got my linux network. No problems, one machine as a gateway to the net
and also a DHCP server, one machine as a samba server and a webserver.

Also, on my network, I have 17 client machines, which run either
win98/2k/NT. I reinstall on these machines regularly, like once a month,
maybe twice. That's around 35 installs a month. What I want to be able to
do... is boot up a client machine, with a linux boot disk, and have the
client machine running a small version of linux with the ability to run X -
And connect to my server. That way, I can download whatever files I want in
a graphical environment, to my local disk. I don't need linux on the local
machines, because, A: There's a lot of them, and B: I don't use the client
machines. Basically, if I can get this to work on a small scale, then when I
do big rollouts, I won't have to carry CD's with me all the time. Just a
laptop, and some floppy disks.

It sounds like you want Linux installed locally on the computer, then just
access files via NFS (and names/passwords via NIS)

If you don't want a hard drive on a local computer, then I'd suggest hunting
for a distro which has been optimized to fit on a compact flash card (256
megs MIGHT be enough)
