Hamish, LTSP Folks,
the problem was solved last night on the HOD server side. This is
a brief description of my travails, just in case you run into a similar
problem.
The first thing to do was to dump the IMB JRE, it introduced many
problems while hiding the real trouble. Removal took care of netscape
crashing and of the "unable to write in /tmp" problem. I still don't know
which /tmp directory it was referring to.
The real problem on the HOD server side was that netscape was
asking me for an additional login that looked like the real user login on
the server as opossed to the ssl login to get to the HOD server. It turned
out to be a valid dialog that is normally hidden, because the values are
entered automagically. Once I new what those values were supposed to be,
everything went swimmingly. I still have to go through the printer setup.
but the main objective has been achieved without using any windoze
software.
I have not been able to ascertain neither the type of computer,
nor the operating system, nor HOD release level. julius
