Thank you, gonna check the perms for the individual users. Thats a good
starting place. As for root, when I log in I do not get sound, except =
when I
log onto the server.

It is strange that you get sound on Gnome but not KDE.  I would look at =
the
permissions for /dev/dsp and make sure that everyone (user, group, and
other)
has read/write access to the device.  It is possible that Gnome runs =
its
sound
daemon as root whereas KDE might run it under the user you log in as.  =
Also
try
logging in as root with KDE and see if you get sound that way.
