K12OS: rsync as alternative to nis/nfs?

First, a quick overview of my set up - 6 application servers mounting
/home from a central file server using NFS, and authenticating against
the same file server via NIS - 140 terminals.

We're experiencing regular problems with users unable to log into the
application servers - they get bounced back to the xdm chooser screen to
pick one of the app servers, or bounced out to that particular app
server's login screen. Frequently they can simply choose the same app
server and it will then accept their login.

I'm interested in the possibility of setting up the app servers to have
a local copy of /etc/passwd, /etc/group, /etc/shadow, and /home which
are synchronized with the central file server.

Does anyone know if rsync will work for this? I'm especially interested
in the bidirectional effectiveness - if a user changes their password on
app1, will it sync to the fileserver (and then from the fileserver out
to the other app servers) so that they can use the new password on app2.

Thoughts would be appreciated!
