Squid should be able to handle that kind of load easily though.

How many computers are making connections to this machine?

I have a single 266 with 384 MB ram hosting squid and file services for
about 100 machines who are on all day long.  It does get a little banged up,
but keeps on going.

Also, have you looked at Dans-guardian?  You might benefit from this and the
cost is very low.  Support is good as well.
