Re: [K12OSN] DSL?

I use a D-Link DI-604 "residential gateway" (firewall/router) for my
office. My dsl service is SBC/Yahoo. The modem is a used Efficient Networks
SpeadStream 5360 from halfbay.com. I signed up on a Win 98 machine, the
only MS box on my lan. The rest of the hosts are various GNU/Linux boxes.

I think firewalls should be in front of the internal network: Internet ->
dsl modem -> firewall -> router -> lan. The firewall should be locked down.
Find a low resource box, 486 or Pentium, and a couple of spare nics and
turn the box into a single floppy firewall. Or go to the mall and pick up
an appliance -- the D-Link gateway/firewall/router was about $35-$40 U.S.

Test your firewall at Gibson Research http://grc.com/default.htm. Look for
the ShieldsUP! link about half way down the page.
