I would recommending getting off of the 7.1 version. The "pristine"
releases are always the x.2's except for the 7.3 release which was to
meet some goals unfortunately not handled in 7.2. Earlier versions of
Netscape and Mozilla had issues with killing off stale or defunct
processes. I have also seen it corrupt email, this is not the norm
though. If you can't upgrade to a newer version of the OS then at least
upgrade to a newer version of your browser and software giving you
issues. A few packages are simple to upgrade, however, the whole OS is
more complicated. Just a piece of information that maybe useful to you
and others is how to do it on the fly.

If you are using RHN here are some steps to to a version upgrade on the
fly. I have done many, however, you have to watch the changing
dependencies per release. You may have to not only rpm -Fvh packages
but rpm -Uvh a few others not already installed. Now for the fun stuff.

1. Download the redhat-release rpm via ftp. I usually ncftp to
ftp.rutgers.edu or ncsu's ftp site.
2. Install the new redhat-release rpm.
3. up2date -p to tell RHN you are that release. :)
4. up2date -l and it will give you all the packages for the new
version. :)
5. If it fails you'll have to handle the dependencies first.
6. Only time you should need to reboot is when going into a new kernel.

If the above isn't an option then awk and sed are your friend. Get
O'reilly's book and learn it. It is powerful for taking output from ps
-e and grabbing processes and killing them.

Regards,
BMan
