ok, so you want to change from smoothwall to K12LTSP for your firewall duties?

That is not such a good idea.  I would leave smoothwall there, and setup NAT 
on smoothwall.

K12LTSP does not compile anything during an install.  Compiling a Kernel can 
take hours.

All Kernels do NAT 0 it doesn't have to be compiled in.  If a Kernel module is 
required, then iptables will insert it on-the-fly.

If you would like to learn iptables, then I would suggest printing-out the 
iptables howto (find on google) and carry it with you for your 'light 
reading'.  Read and digest 3 times, and then dig into a non-critical box, 
such as your home firewall and have a hack.
