Don't know how good or bad this is, but http://www.emco.is/pricelist.html
would do some 5000 computers for under $1500, and it can read the registry, 
scan the disk, or a couple other ways of finding what is out there in 
Mickeysoft land. It supports a number of formats for output, so this might 
be the trick - still, $1500 is a lot of money in a school system.....
