[K12OSN] Install compiler?

Howdy List! Now that I have my server up and running, I have some more
questions:
1) I want to install Dan's Guardian so that our library can filter content,
but it appears that I did not install any compilers. So, I tried to install
the default development tools but that failed because I didn't have openssl,
pam and glibc installed. How can I install missing software?

2) My client boots up and loads a 1024x768 screen but my server seems to be
locked in to a lower resolution even though the settings are for 1024x768.
How can I get a higher res on my servers display?
