[K12OSN] problem with swith

I'm a newbie to this list and I hope there is an obvious aswer for this one:

Scenario:
K12LTSP2.1 server with 1 client on a cross over UTP cable
(been working 100% for 6 months)

want to put in another client today.
replaced the cross-over UTP cable with two straight cables going to a hub in 
the middle (actually a Cnet 8port swith) (only the original 2 machines on the 
hub)

Suddenly the client:
after "pivot root" it "can't connect to nfs server on 192.168.0.254"

put back the cross-over cable and everything is 100%
connect the 2 pc's via the switch - no joy.
The client is booting but can't mount the nfs

I guess the problem is with the switch ?
