Re: [K12OSN] K12LTSP Names

Welcome back, Tony!

Folks, I still have to wonder, though, why we want to change the name in
the first place. K12LTSP is a fine name, I think; I just don't see any
problem with it.

That said, whatever name gets chosen--if a new one gets chosen--I agree
that we should stay away from using Red Hat's name. This is in no way a
slight on Red Hat; they make a fine distro and have helped this project,
and the Free Software movement in general, in a big way. Heck, I'm
surprised they're not marketing K12LTSP as "Red Hat Terminal Server"
themselves! They'd have every right.

The rumor about LTSP running on multiple distros is quite true. I did
it with both Slackware 8.1 and Red Hat 6.2 (the latter for Macs acting
as thin clients). However, I had to compile the source, which, while
for me isn't a problem, would certainly be for teachers and most
sysadmins. That's what makes K12LTSP so nice; it's turnkey. Even with
all the other functionality, it is, first and foremost, a terminal
server, otherwise you could just install a few edutainment packages onto
stock Red Hat and be done. I believe that any new name chosen, if any,
needs to reflect that. There is no other turnkey GNU/Linux distro of
which I'm aware that integrates that functionality as does this one.

I think we should stick with "one version" of the distro, just for ease
of maintenance, and for "customer" consistency. I just don't see the
benefit of taking the Microsoft route on this one. However, we could
have multiple installation types, say, one that just does term services
only, one that integrates LDAP/Samba/NetWare/AppleTalk (if feasible),
and so on. However, I do like the basic naming idea that Tony outlines
below, because then the *BSD folks could take the K12LTSP source,
compile it on, say, FreeBSD, and call it "K12 Terminal Server, built on
FreeBSD". This would be great, especially at universities that already
use FreeBSD or NetBSD (MIT comes to mind for the latter).

BTW, let's not forget that this *is* a K-12 oriented distribution. You
don't see TuxType, TuxMath, etc. in most general distributions out
there. If folks want to use K12LTSP in businesses or in universities,
due to its merits, that's great! I'm all for it. However, *our* focus
is K-12 education. Other usage is merely a beneficial side effect.
