[K12OSN] K12LTSP 3.0.1 - unable to boot workstation

I've downloaded, burnt, verified and installed K12LTSP 3.0.1 from the
www.k12ltsp.org download page.

As I understand it, it ought to be possible to boot a diskless
workstation over Ethernet after having run K12LTSP_initialize on the
server without giving the server any information about the workstation.

I have made an appropriate workstation boot disk for the network card in
the relevant workstation.

I have a working network connection.

If, as root, I enter in a terminal on the server:

tail -f /var/log/messages

I see messages consistent (I think) with things working properly:

May 7 23:33:35 server dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from [my workstation MAC
address] via eth0
May 7 23:33:36 server dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.0.252 to [my
workstation MAC address] via eth0
May 7 23:33:36 server dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.0.252
(192.168.0.254) from [my workstation MAC address] via eth0
May 7 23:33:36 server dhcpd: DHCPACK on 192.168.0.252 to [my
workstation MAC address] via
eth0

On the workstation I see a message:

Loading 192.168.0.254:/lts/vmlinuz.ltsp ....

The kernel never loads and all I get is a very slowly growing line of
dots. I'm not sure but think maybe I should be getting a sequence of
different characters, e.g.: ./\. overwriting each other to show progress.

In any event, whatever the position regarding progress indicator
characters, I'm getting nowhere with booting the workstation.

I get the same result with 2 different workstations, one with 24Mb RAM
the other with 64Mb RAM, using 2 different network cards, so think I can
eliminate the possibilities both of inadequate RAM on the workstations
(the kernel's only about 5Mb isn't it?) and of a defective network card
on a workstation.

Please can anyone advise what is or may be wrong? Have any of you had
similar experiences?
